More seriously, all whisky I have tried is hugely different.

What I do not get is this peaty thing and some other flavours. I once read some whisky reviews when getting a collector bottle for my brother in law. It was quite a few years back and it had some ranking of best whiskies in the world that year. The top 2 were unobtainable due to having sold out everywhere, but third was a Suntory and I bought him that.

In the process I read a lot of reviews trying to make sense of the language. There was a description for a 25yo Ardbeg being peaty, smelling and partly tasting like TCP and having a tarry quality.

So when I stumbled on an establishment selling some, I thought I had to try it to correlate it to the review-speak.

Only I didn't realize these weren't poetic words like we sometimes use for audio, but were very literal. I don't get why anybody would think peat, TCP and tar was a tasty mix.

The peaty thing seems to have a strong following and I am not sure why. Do some whiskey drinkers long for the days of eating the earth from the collapsed scrum in school rugby? I don't get it.

I've had 30yo Glenlivet Reserve with Oak finish, which was extremely nice. As was a similar aged Glenmorangie, but I cannot wrap my head or taste buds around peaty whisky.

Each to their own, but for me Glenmorangie (and Glenfiddich for that matter) aren't interesting enough flavour-wise to justify buying them - even the older bottlings.

Do you enjoy smokey flavours in food - bacon, smoked salmon, smoked duck, etc? If so, it isn't much of a step to smokey flavours in whisky. Try one of the more lightly peated single malts - I know that the heavier peat in some of the Islay malts can be challenging, but there are plenty that will give a hint of peatiness without blowing your head off. Bunnahabhain, for example, would be a good place to start.

Talisker would be a starting point too

One whisky that is a bargain at the moment, is the one I am drinking this evening. The OSWA ( Online Scotch Whisky Awards) blended malt of the year from Compass Box. Normally £41 in the UK, down to 32 on Amazon. I already have a spare!

discounted price.

I've just finished a bottle of Bunnahabhain, just a basic one, I want to but another bottle of Whisky but not sure what to get. I quite like 'challenging' flavours, Islay malts with smoky/peaty flavours are good but open to any recommendations. Cheers!

Have you explored many of the Kilchoman malts? Some interesting stuff there from a very young distillery.
