I'm trying again to get into the Robert Schumann symphonies.
It's been a half century long struggle endeavour, and I'm trying again atm.

Any recommendations for recordings?

Currently getting some of my best results so far from ancient stereo Kubelik on DG.

The recent Alsop Mahler orchestrations on Naxos kicked off the new attempt.
Others sampled this morning (insomnia strikes again) -
Zinman, Gielen, Tilson Thomas, Karajan, Butt, Solti.

My issues with the Schumann symphonies - I generally find them thematically trite and developmentally uninteresting.
Clearly I'm missing the point, as greater minds than mine have greatly admired them!

...hmmm, the Kubelik Schumann 3rd is almost convincing me that it's worth listening to atm.

Although I'm streaming not CD playing.
Have you tried John Eliot Gardiner? I like his period stuff but he did Schumann with the LSO, supposed to be pretty good.

Inspired by the post by @griffo104 elsewhere, listening now to Bantock's Hebridean symphony, and looking forward to the anticipated release on streaming of Hyperion's back catalogue!

And in similar vein, some Robert Simpson.
Hmm, I'm not as unsympathetic to it as I used to be.

If you like Shostakovich in one of his moderately bleak moods, I should think you'll like this.

I enjoyed that, so onward in Fridian mode

This is interesting.

From the cover I'd expected a straight orchestral transcription of the Goldberg Variations.
But it's very far from that.
It's kind of transcribed through a 21st century musical prism.
Very entertaining, it happily encompasses several centuries, you never know where or when it's going to go next!

Rameau on CD, Zais Ouverture is so dramatic.
