Arrived this morning, will start asap.

In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it’s too late?

Just finished this and can't wait to see the film "J'Accuse". Fascinating story based on what happened in France in 1894. The degree of anti-Semitism in France was running quite high and it brings into perspective why in later years the Vichy government were so keen to surrender the unfortunate Jewish population to the occupying Nazis. This was done to a degree that alarmed and surprised the Nazis. Anyway this book is not about that but the corruption and deceit in the army and the way that they were determined to send an innocent man to death or worse; Devil's Island.

I don’t think I can take any more underhand, dodgy politics and deals. It’s been going on all our lives, but seems to have reached new heights. I’d love to read this, but it would tip me over the edge.....🤪

fantastic Chris

I am a MASSIVE fan of Otarion who do pregressive rock/berlin electrionica . he has just done 2 albums based on Jonah .

 https://otarion.bandcamp.com/album/prayer-from-the-deep

he writes

My music is about the story of the prophet Jonah.
It is one of the short stories in the Bible.
He resisted God's instruction.

This first album "Prayer from the Deep" was the first part of my project and ends where Jonah came ashore.
Attention

This album, "No Time was lost", tells the second part of this story.

I experienced some parallels in my life.
So I was able to experience God's grace through Jesus Christ.

Just finished two books:

The Italian Girl - Iris Murdoch (one of her early novels, felt like a 1960s French film).

The life changing magic of tidying up - Marie Kondo (one of those best seller lifestyle books). Basically the autobiography of a person who wants everyone to live in a near-empty house.

At first, I thought Marie Kondo was a tidying nazi, but I can see her reasoning now. However, until she comes round to sort me out, my house will remain full of crap that I’m too lazy to get rid of.....🤨

I picked up Julian Barnes's The Sense of an Ending again, after having dropped it to do something else. I sped through  a good portion of the book over two days. It's short anyway, but I like to linger on some bits.

Don't know if there are any Julian Barnes fans here (his Before She Met Me has always been a favourite of mine), but this is a good one of his. A Man Booker winner (though that usually makes me want to run the other way). Over time he's managed to pare-down his style to say exactly what he wants in the minimum choice vocabulary. To me he's developed over time better than his contemporary Martin Amis, who still exudes a puerile sense of 'nihilism' at times. Barnes's is more like craggy-faced wisdom you read and imagine you could easily have thought of yourself if only you were as observant as Barnes.

I'm at the peak part of the book, so it'll be good to see how it ends and how the title relates to that.

A change of pace and I'm reading Patrick Hamilton's 1953 novel Mr. Stimpson and Mr. Gorse, which was of course the source material for the 1987 series The Charmer with Nigel Havers. They aren't identical at all and the style is very different from modern novels, which is a welcome difference.

Patrick Hamilton was also the author of the play Gaslight from which the currently trendy term 'gaslighting' is derived.

The Devil's Punch Bowl by Greg Iles - third in the Penn Cage novels series. Excellent so far.

I've also just finished Flip Back by Andrew Cartmel , which is the fourth Vinyl Detective novel. If any Wammers haven't discovered these yet, you need to check them out. Our hero specialises in finding rare records but there's a lot of nerdy music and hi-fi talk!
