When terminating cat 6 into a socket with a punch down tool, I have read that yoiu need to keep the wires twisted as much as possible before the terminations.
Can anybody describe their method for this please?

I'm no expert at this, but try to practice one or two times, if you have enough length of wire. Generally, you only strip back the outer insulation as far as you need to make up the connections into the termination. So most of the twists still exist back inside of the unstripped wire. You have to expose what you have to expose, but try to keep all eight strands straight once you have fitted them inside the jack. There are tons of YouTube videos which should help you do this.
