I have a notion that synergy, as it relates to Hi Fi is by far, by any measure, the most influential aspect of a listening experience besides the acoustics of the space one is in.
It can't be measured though. Weird.

You may well be right , the interaction of each item in the chain can and does make a difference . Thing is it is often so difficult to know how things will work with each other until you actually try them . Croft OTL 3 should in theory be ideal to work with Quad ESL57 and they do indeed sound very good but only up to a fairly low volume level and you just can not get it to go loud enough . At the opposite end a pair of 500 Watt Mono Blocks in class D should have enough to make them go loud but in reality it just does not work . You can do this with any item that has a unique set of requirements thinking Tannoy , Klipsch , LS3/5A . All have issues that make them work in some combinations and not in others . But it is hard to measure .

I live in a fairly rural part of the Country and so Hi Fi shops are few and far between. There used to be a place with dedicated listening rooms & the staff would happily set up any gear for you including anything you wished to bring in. All gone now, such a shame.

I think it can be measured to a point. The tricky part is correlating personal preference with measurements.
