You may well be right , the interaction of each item in the chain can and does make a difference . Thing is it is often so difficult to know how things will work with each other until you actually try them . Croft OTL 3 should in theory be ideal to work with Quad ESL57 and they do indeed sound very good but only up to a fairly low volume level and you just can not get it to go loud enough . At the opposite end a pair of 500 Watt Mono Blocks in class D should have enough to make them go loud but in reality it just does not work . You can do this with any item that has a unique set of requirements thinking Tannoy , Klipsch , LS3/5A . All have issues that make them work in some combinations and not in others . But it is hard to measure .
