Plenty of that extensive literature is critical. It is an ineresting theory, but evidence for real world examples is weak.

No doubt there'll be Veblen consultants charging big fees for advising successful companies on their marketing strategies, but that doesn't make it real.

Well I’d be interested to read a couple of the papers you think best make that critique if you have the references. FWIW I think signalling behaviours in consumption are pretty strong and not just in Veblen terms eg ‘conspicuous ethics’ etc
