Me and my partner have recently purchased a TT again after I swore some 15 years ago never to get back into the media again. I sold my collection and TT's and was happy not having to fuss over records again.

The catalyst was the Bristol show where she was fascinated by TT's. I reluctantly agreed but said we would only have a collection of 100 records/50 each at any time. For any album added after this, one will have to go. We are also moving to Spain shortly so space will, at least initially, perhaps be restricted.

We are about 25 in. 15/10 in favour of myself. Mine are almost all Jazz other than a lovely double album by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra playing Sibelius in the 70's. I have a list of remaining jazz I want so am now looking for suggestions of superbly recorded Classical LP's, Karajan being one of my favourite conductors but open to all suggestions. I would favour specialist audiophile pressings such as from The Original Source (Deutsche Grammophone Audiophile re-issues) and similar but would be happy to seek out others that don't fall into this category if they have historical or quality recording credentials.

Finally, Metal/Death metal. Again, there are a lot of abysmally recorded examples out there and some good ones. If I pay good money I want the best for LP replay. I favour the fastest, non melodic ones, the harder/faster the better.

I stream using Qobuz/Tidal HiRes services so any LP's I buy will have to be exceptional, that includes cover quality, inlays (if there) etc.

Very grateful for any suggestions you may think fit this bill.

Thank you

I used to have a larger collection than I have now. I am focusing on just owning the LPs that are meaningful to me. Typically these are the ones that I bought when I first started listening to music and the bands that are most meaningful to me. One of the reasons for owning these LPs is that these albums sound correct to me as I typically only heard them on LP whereas the digital versions don’t and vice versa; I listened to Goldfrapps first album for 12 years on CD and bought the LP but didn’t like it as much as it sounded quite different.

Where are you based Drummerman?
I am travelling up and down the country this coming Sunday and Monday and could bring a box of my best classical for you to rummage through.

There aren't many as yet, but if you want 'superbly recorded', and superbly pressed for that matter, then look at the Mike Valentine 'chasing the dragon' releases. I have the Verdi in Venice here and it is simply stunning.

If you're a drummer and into jazz, I imagine you're going to at least get some Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Weather Report and such, however they are recorded.

There are audiophile jazz discs like Jazz at the Pawnshop but the music is abysmal. You could try the ECM records, like the Keith Jarrett ones recorded in Oslo by Jan Erik Kongshaug who was a master and a good guitarist.

I’ve a similar experience with vinyl. I ditched everything first time around, thought it was the digital revolution and to never look back, 30+ years later I’m back loving TT’s and records again :)

Like you, I’m keeping the collection very select though, no hoarding. But I do like the vinyl experience, it’s different from digital. And I like the sound of an all analogue system, as amazing as digital is it reproduces music differently which I often long for in DACs. Plus it’s a nice novelty playing a record, having the large cover art, and it’ll probably always be a cool thing to do, no matter how a technologically advanced we get.

Technology is great though, we’ve never had it so good with digital, but I do think records will still always be good therapy, for us audio nutters anyway.

I know how this guy feels :D
