Contemporary Music

My favourite era is late 20th Century: Stravinsky, Britten, late romantics. I fancy this should be the popular period as we are children of the 20th Century. Be that as it may I am presently listening to a lot of Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, who are both still alive and kicking.

But it needs to provoke an emotional response, not just an intellectual one.

Take any piece of music that doesn't affect you emotionally, whatever that means, and ask yourself how did that piece of music affect the musician(s) playing it? For example, I'm listening to Steven Isserlis's fine recording of Thomas Adès's Lieux retrouvés, a piece of music that might leave you stone cold, played by a highly expressive cellist rarely accused of lacking emotion in his playing.
