Thanks for that, it's all interesting stuff.

So long as it all keeps working I don't feel the urge to replace any of it now. I'm at the age where my body is falling apart more quickly than technology is improving! I had a listen through to Moon Safari this morning (instead of going to work) and would have sworn it was a remastered version, even though it's the same cd I've had for 15 years or whatever.

Love my little arcam setup! Just need to figure out the remote now...

@dogmatic I used to own the Alpha 7 CD player which I had upgraded to the 8SE, when it returned the model number on the front  had also been changed to correspond with upgrade it had received. I would think it likely that the model number on the front would suggest it is a Alpha 8.

IIRC the 7 only had one pair of analogue outputs while the 8, 8SE & 9 had two pairs.

Out of interest what was entailed in the upgrade from 7 to 8se?

It was about twenty years ago, so the details are a little hazy, but it was a DAC upgrade and HDCD decoding. It had to go back to the retailer for the upgrade (can’t remember if it was sent back to Arcam from there).

All of the CD players in that range were upgradable to the Alpha 9. A bit more information can be found here.

Indeed x2. My two CD23T's however continue to provide excellent service at around 20 years old. Transports and lasers are available, if not readily available, for most CD players. A DAC chipset failure would of course lead to the short car journey to the local electronic waste disposal point.

You could that about many other brands I've not owned. Being realistic you only buy what's accessible and falls into your budget at the time.

I hear what you're saying. When the player arrived it had possibly been treated rather disrespectfully in transit and was skipping all over the place, got sent for a quick once over to my local repair man who fixed it up a treat, beeb spot on ever since.

Tested the A28 with some Leftism, Jose Feliciano and Kacey Musgraves this morning. It thumped the bejeez out of leftfield, much more so than the alpha 8 did.  Very impressive. Not sure I noticed so much difference with Kacey or Jose but both certainly sounded at least as good as the old amp. I always thought the alpha 8 amps gave a very musical reproduction of acoustic guitars, I might try some Rodrigo y Gabriela when i get in tonight to compare and contrast. I did play Eva Cassidy's live album on flac format via the bluetooth on the dac but that album sounds amazing through any setup, the production is so good!

First impressions of the A28 are very positive though, looking forward to trying a few more favourites through it.

More importantly, impressed with your musical choices. Leftfield and Rodrigo y Gabriela? :^:) I shall be digging both of these CDs out of the rack tonight when I get home and giving my D33 a workout with them!

Glad you're enjoying your newly-acquired purchases. Grab a bottle of beer or wine, chill out to your favourite tunes and try to avoid the mistake of constantly chasing the next upgrade, and the next, and the next.... you'll end up with "the madness" that affects too many of us!

Just wanted to let you know that I have now changed my Kef R500 speakers for the Harbeth SHL5+ 40th Anniversaries.

These have an extremely detailed mid range and neutral balance and the A49 drives them beautifully. I'd really recommend the combo for fellow A49 users. :^

Terribly rainy day today in NI so I thought I'd post a system pic for those that like that sort of thing. Can't believe how much detail I was missing with my last speakers compared to the Harbeths. Now off to the Harbeth forum to upload speaker porn..

After much fannying around buying and trying amps (all 2nd hand so I've never lost any money), all of which were okay, but during which I retained my Arcam A29 as "the keeper", I've now changed my strategy as clearly I like/prefer the Arcam house sound.

Now have my "ol trusty" A29 in the rack and a heavy box with an A39 in the front room ready for setup 😁.

I assume that I will prefer this and intend to eventually go up the chain again and finish on an A49. However, funds and priorities do not allow for this now... speakers are next.

Should be a fun weekend setting it up.

Ps - heads up for any Arcam lovers... The A29 will be hitting the wam classifieds soon...

Enjoy! The A39 is a great amp; as good as the A38, some people saying it's better, some saying it's just different.

Gad to see your endgame and you won't regret it. As I never tire of saying (sorry), the A49 is in an Arcam league of its own. Do set up a standing search on the 'bay. There was a mint one listed at £1800 or offers last week - it didn't last long. Analogue Seduction sold their ex-demo for £1999 a few weeks earlier. They don't come up very often; when one does, just sell one of your family into slavery.

I saw that A49 myself Flash - great value. A few P49s have been on the 'bay recently too - I wonder if bi-amping with an A49 would be worthwhile? Depends on your speakers I guess.

I see that Arcam now have an HDA PA240 power amp - I wonder if it's a replacement for the P49 or will they bring out an FMJ one? It is much cheaper than the P49 when it was first released. Not sure if it's because its not as good or just that it's now made in China (rather than New York).

Would be nice to see a replacement for the A49 at some stage.

Hmmm, interesting. The A49/P49 were developed when Arcam enjoyed a brief period of Canadian (I think) ownership. I was disappointed by the early models in the latest range as they looked cheap and not very Arcam... But on paper, the HDA P240 similarly hits 50w in Class A and costs 70% of the P49’s £3250 RRP. I’d love to see a review... a proper review which compares the latest with the P49. If it is 99% of the amp at half the price, that would give Arcam a massive boost. If it a P49 beater at half the price then that would be a game-changer.
