Hawk, you are a star! It's from Lime Tree Arbour, on The Boatman's Call, by the esteemed Mr Cave.

Here is a genuine tricky one. I think this one is ideal for Cloth-ears

"My name is Eddie

I am a cat

I sleep with one eye open

watching the morning sail

Someone calls "eddie"

up to their lap

and I purr

But I'd sure like to get me

my breakfast

especially a fishtail

Turn it into a fish scale"

Absolutely correct! :D Cave is a treasure trove of off-the-wall lyrics. Others from the same album that I paricularly like include:

Aguy wearing plastic antlers, presses his bum against the glass

and

My typewriter had turned mute as a tomb,

And my piano crouched in the corner of my room with all its teeth bared

Sounds like Joan of Arc to me???

Correct again, Mr Hawk. Leonard Cohen's Joan of Arc, of course: not OMD's!

A fine toon, especially the original. I like the Jennifer Warnes duet too, but she doesn't quite manage to get the demented anguish into the "La, la, la.." choruses that Happy Len does.

Guest earl of sodbury

Ah, that's more like it.Nasty story behind that song if I remember - friend of JJ's home in Hampstead? was ransacked, wife raped while he was away, summat grim like that... :( Instant timewarp back to my very angry bitter youth seeing that line. And a truly bloody great band in their day...

Ithought you'd be along, Earl.

For those of you who didn't know, it's from 5 minutes by the Stranglers.
