New Budget Audionote CD Player

Recommended Posts

No upper level defined. Colloms' rating system sort of grew organically out of a 0-10 scale where he found resolution was a bit lacking in the upper half of the scale, so he just expanded it upwards... or something like that. Your average specialist hi-fi-component would be at the 12-15 level, the highest he's awarded so far for a digital component was in the region of 150 IIRC.

If you look at the list, there's some weird ratings in there AFAIC...

But hey, this is the man that started rating Pink Triangles after they reverted to a big ol' buzzy synchronous AC motor... for a while.

Should be the perfect upgrade for the CD555 owning Naimee, four boxes and three power supplies! :D

I thought you were joking Box; 450. I think the Metrum (the darling at the moment) is rated at 175 so this item is way above that and certainly above the Audionote DAC5 at about 50.

I suspect this is a development tool and we will see things trickle down, although we will need it to be a flood down beore I can consider one. It probably won't be possible to upgrade from my DAC2.1x......

Hopefully the review will become more easily available (or I'll buy it at Whittlebury) as with that score this is the game changer. I wonder if it will be at Whittlebury............

I'm the last one normally to moan about highly priced stuff. I mean, if you have, you want, and you can, then best of luck to you.

That said, at nearly two hundred grand for a CD player, it would need to be more than a 'game changer'. I mean, just how good can the game get, bearing in mind it's always going to be ultimately restricted by the quality of the mastering and production of the actual disc itself?

You might love to but you are not going to, maybe because it is none of your business.

Your opinion of course is your own business which I doubt AN are interested in.

On a personal level, hifi in this sort of price range is so far out of my league that it cannot impinge upon my life in any way, which is maybe why I don't think about it or worry about it.

Of course I know AN don't give a flying fuck about what people think of the price and I also don't care or worry about stuff at this ridiculous price point.

But are we not allowed to speculate and debate items like this, whether it be about the cost, the style, sound, quality of component etc etc without being criticised for doing so.

It would be good if it was at Whittlebury. Audio Note generally put together great-sounding show systems from the more affordable end of the range, it would be nice to see a full-on system from them for a change.

and that applies to all ultra high end equipment. But, as you say, it is down to personal means/choice. If £200k is spare change to you, then why wouldn't you consider one?

In truth (and has been said before) just about everything that everyone on this forum owns is in this category.

I have a couple of friends who would be considered as quite comfortably off. One of them thinks nothing about replacing a Bentley Continental with a new one every 18 months or so, but was utterly horrified to hear what I spent on a couple of valves. Each, indeed, to their own.

You can post what you like, as can anybody else.

Yeah, one man's values, another man's

I buy what I can comfortably afford, but would never go into debt for a piece of hifi :nup:

But does he ask for a full breakdown of costs before buying the car?

Yes we are.

People will of course say it's a which hunt, or that we are all anti hifi... The same old nonsense. But it's not as nonsensical as a 192k cd player.

I'm just going to point and laugh frankly.

, with a 200k car you'd get a response that showed the time and engineering and material costs that went into it.

This.. is.. a.. cd..player.
