the thing is.

distributers charge a "dealer price". all the majors(HMV, Virgin etc) demand, and get something called a "file discount" on every product that they sell. I think it's 25% or more.

your independent record store doesn't get the discount. Now that the supermarkets are on board, they are demanding, a bigger discount than even the majors. consequently the nominal "dealer price" goes up. It's getting to the stage that the discount is so large that the supermarkets are charging the customers less for a CD than the indepenents can buy it from the distributor.

the retailers often bear the brunt of the blame for the cost of CDs. However I'm of the opinion that in the US, retailers have to make similar margins to survive, so I have to make the assumption that the labels and distributors are artificially inflating the cost of CDs. on a small run, discs, including a glass master will cost roughly £1-2 each. (500-1000 pressed) on a huge run, you'll get the glass master free, and each disc will cost under 20p to manufacture.

Quite often in my line of work, I see a product that retailsfor £300 here. it retails for $300 in the states and is made in Korea. :?

the retailer suffers when in actual fact the blame lies further back in the supply chain.

The difficulty is that the small independents are now suffering as they cannot get a better price on anything. and now with everyone and their dog setting up online shops from their bedrooms (with no overheads) they can give the products away for silly money, leaving the specialists to go out of business. :x

ultimately, we'll only be able to buy the top 40 when we go to tescos, as everywhere else will have shut down.

You get a better choice online than in normal shops these days I find. True many online places only sell the popular stuff but not all.

The most clever and adaptable independents will transform their business into an online presence...

I understand your dismay and have seen it happen to Sleeves in Kirkaldy and Falkirk. Fuckin shame as it was a great place to buy vinyl and concert tickets.

What gets me tho is the fact that I was in Stirling at w/end and Virgin's prices are ridiculous , Pink Floyd The Wall £20.99 cd101.co.uk £8.99. That is a rip off IMO.Plus the afore mentioned stocks as much games as music and you can hardly move for Dvd's. And Virgin fones. AAAAaaaaargh. Cool shop in Stirling called Europa music for good selection of import cd's , vinyl and smoking paraphenalia:peace:

Independants are still quite strong if they stock a decent amount of vinyl , I feel there is a strong resurgance in the amount of vinyl being bought nowadays , and it will get stronger. Better with a 12" red vinyl than a silver disc.

I notice that you are from Motherwell take a trip to Fopp in Union st, Glasgow , how can they sell music and dvd so cheap but HMV and Virgin can't ? Same in Aberdeen , Dundee and Edinburgh plus Avalanche Records in Edinburgh have 2 shops that are ALWAYS busy and they have an ebay shop.

I really think it's all down to stock , why order a cd in Edinburgh to go pick up a week later when you can get it posted for cheaper online. Virgin seems to lag behind coz anything I ask for gets a funny look. Want James "cockney ryhming slang" Blunt and they have loads of it.

Fopp is great Chezi. What they do well is constantly change the offers. I just look at what they're offering for a fiver and buy a few. Its good they have back catalogues of John Martyn or Nick Cave or whoeverall for £5. And iif there is nothing you fancy, next month its usually changed. Thats my experience of the Aberdeen Fopp anyway.

Have to agree there Sony. Only complaint I have about Fopp is that when you get to the counter with your hands full of bargain cd's , the fly bastards have covered the counter in "must have" cd's or dvd's .........that are only £3.:D

Fopp in Rose st. Edinburgh even has a bar :shock:Oh yes! a music shop with a bar. Aint that bliss? ;)

Fopp is ok, but a lot of CDs are still quite expensive. You can usually do better online.

Granted , but to be able to walk into a"side street" shop and get cd's dvd's and books at that price is brilliant in my opinion.

I've never in my life been in Fopp when it's empty and the pricing keeps Avalanche in Edinburgh on their toes.

And no pocketful of coppers when you eventually drag yourself out , £3 , £5 , £7 , etc etc. class !!!!!

chezi. the stindgy bastard.;)

Chewie , cd arrived today , that's just over 3 weeks for Long view ; Mercury Subversions 2cds.

It's not bad considering it came straight from Hong Kong , £7.99 including delivery.

TBH , I think I would rather use www.cd101.co.uk as they are about £1 more expensive including postage , plus they are delivered within a week ,unless it's some obscure stuff that usually comes from America , they are good for vinyl tho.
