Yesterday ...

On IEM headphones with a portable minidisc player in my pocket while digging to set up a new area of lawn, recordings of live performances recorded off the radio years ago of ...

- Barber cello concerto

- Kabalevsky violin concerto

- Korngold violin concerto.

All good. :^

Then in front of the Maggie panels ....

rontgen_7771192.jpg

and some chamber music by the same guy --

I have no idea why Rontgen isn't better known :? - his music is superb!

Another morning's gardening and had another music sesh with these ...

- Barber cello concerto

- Kabalevsky violin concerto

- Korngold violin concerto.

Still good! The Korngold grows in my affections - the slow movement is totally yummy. :)

Listened to this twice yesterday eve. Italian, contemporary with Respighi.

I've had this CD a while - and I find it difficult to get to grips with.

Pleasantish orchestral, but once over it's forgotten.

Meh. I think I wasted over 2 hours of my life on it yesterday.

-- superb prformances (and recording) which take full advantage of the authentic instrument approach.

Great fortepiano sound (so very different from a modern concert grand) and just love those thwacky tympani thwacks. :D

I like the 2 string quartets but not the song cycle that they surround on this album.

I heard one movement from Batiz's Sheherazade on a sampler CD and was impressed. Even more impressed by all of it! Mackerras on Telarc had previously been my fave, and it is a bit better recorded than the Naxos, but I suspect the Batiz trumps it as a performance.

rubbra_8_572286.jpg

- played the piano trio #1 and really enjoyed it - probably the best Rubbra I have heard - much more to my tastes than Rubbra's orchestral works. I like the string quartets, too.

I fancied some Handel cantatas, so started with this

MI0001039636.jpg?partner=allrovi.com

-- and gave up after about 10 minutes. Kozena's vocal technique is pretty incompetent. :?

So moved on to this ...

-- ahh, that's more like it. :^

complete_beethoven.jpg

A selection from this set. Wonderful playing.

Houstoun is probably my favourite current pianist. His Liszt and Shostakovich is also superb.

At the moment ...

Nice sprightly, lively playing. :^ These pieces are often played a bit ponderously, but not with these guys.

-- Wowee! :D

1264866.jpg

- a 100 minute piece, Schoenberg in lushly romantic mood, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first 30 minutes. But that's enough for me - 20 minutes or so the after vocalists came in I went back to repeat the gorgeous 7 minute purely orchestral opening section (before the vocals come in) and then moved on to ...

511S7j-7%2BGL._SX355_.jpg

-- a lovely album for viola and piano of music by Enescu and Milhaud. The Milhaud pieces especially are beautiful.

Rangell has a bit of a reputation of coming from the left field as far as interpretation is concerned, but I really enjoyed his Art of Fugue. :^ He has recorded quite a bit of Bach; Goldbergs, the 6 Partitas etc. They are on my Tidal playlist. :)

So went on to this ....

51kOi4dBQ4L.jpg

-- oh dear. This didn't work at all for me. It's all kind of loose and slack. :? I listened to the 1st sonata and then gave up.

... and then cleansed my palate with this ...

Ah, lovely.

- I'm not keen on Rangell's Beethoven, but his Bach is excellent, and so is this Haydn.

- magical.

-- some premiere recordings here. Amazing. The serenade and cello concertino are lovely!

610nt56yAKL._SY355_PJautoripBadge,BottomRight,4,-40_OU11__.jpg

-- an astonishing recording of an astonishing performance.

Definitely a Desert Island Disc for me.

Well, this is an interesting curiosity.

And I had better watch my back at Scalford16 cos Gromit may well be after me with a hatchet for what I am about to say ....

481_0853_Mozart_Arranged__86314_std.jpg

Arrangements of Mozart solo piano and chamber music by well known composers (eg Grieg) and some anonymous.

It contains a transcription of the Clarinet Quintet with a 2nd viola taking the place of the clarinet.

YUM !! - wonderous though the pukka clarinet quintet is, I prefer it as a viola quintet. :)

MI0001024966.jpg?partner=allrovi.com

-- WOW !!!

This is amazing.

I seem to be in to transcriptions. :)

91dMOzES4dL._SY355_.jpg

-- stunning performances of the quintets. :^

And the first couple of movements from the 1st quartet from this set ...

BartokQHagen.jpg

Hey, this is quite good. I've been wary of the Bartok quartets previously.
