....and then you'll be a man my son

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about those things that you need to do in life to gain credulity as someone who has 'been around a bit', 'knows the ropes', etc, and I think there's a similar list for HiFi credulity...If you want to sound off here, you need some solid experience IMO. Here's my club membership list....write your own or bugger off.:D

1. Make some DIY speakers....ludicrously easy from kits like Wilmslow audio etc, huge fun, look crap, sound great, massive fun, guaranteed to piss off the other half (long hours in 'shed' + awful final appearance:)

2. Own a record deck from the 70's or earlier. Preferably buy a seperate arm and cart...take it all apart, fiddle, get a test record, curse and swear, discover VTA and skate, play with cleaning fluids, try and make your own mat, spray it, make a plinth, call it a classic.

3. Try valves. Burn yourself, buy cotton gloves, learn how to brasso small pins, enjoy dust, enjoy dusty cracklin noises, heat the house, burn the children, kill the planet, bask in the orange glow of euphony.

4.Contribute to a HiFi show. Discuss earnest factoids with magazine hacks of dubious reputation, blag unsuspecting punters into believing your cables are making the system synergistic, play music everyone hates, rupture yourself on the way in, and on the other side on the way out. Be famous...for 4 hours 17 minutes.

5. Join a forum and post till you drop. Argue, be obstinate, form opinions on kit you've never heard of, let alone heard, make friends, make enemies, be banned, go off on a sulk (vital that), and above all, fail to take any of it seriously.

and then you'll be a man my son.

or better yet, be a wo(man) my daughter

I am woman, hear me roar

In numbers too big to ignore

And I know too much to go back an' pretend

'cause I've heard it all before

And I've been down there on the floor

No one's ever gonna keep me down again

CHORUS

Oh yes I am wise

But it's wisdom born of pain

Yes, I've paid the price

But look how much I gained

If I have to, I can do anything

I am strong (strong)

I am invincible (invincible)

I am woman

1. Tick... buildling one from scratch with zero prior knowledge...

2. Tick... plus have destroyed one cartridge cantilever...

3. Tick... and have got the white gloves to prove. Have also blown an amp with EL84 valves which I haven't gotten around to sorting out yet... don't intend to kill any chidlren. Cats maybe yes.

4. Missed this, not my fault... maybe next year...

5. This goes without saying...

Do I qualify? :fly:

Note to Rocky: look up the difference between credulity and credibility. :D

Hint: there are probably as many credulous audiophiles as credible ones... ;-)

Back to the original OP, a true audiophile with cred will need to:

1. Attend at least 3 bake-offs or hi-fi shows a year and host one.

2. Swap main kit at least twice a year and swap hi-fi paraphenalia (TT mats, suspension, power supplies etc) another twice a year.

3. Post at least 5000 on the Wam and have 3 or more POTD. You automatically qualify if you're a moderator or have been banned.

How's that for standards.

Anyone qualify for both?

Poacher turned Gamepeaker? :)

Maybe the next poster considered for a ban should be made a mod!
