HiFiBerry DAC+DSP

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Anyone used one of these. I currently use (sometimes) a PI to stream FLAC files (from) via DLNA using an Arcam UDP411 for the DLNA and DAC output.

The DSP side of the HiFiBerry got my curiosity as having recently moved house the new living room acoustics aren't brill.

I notice both the HiFiBerry and the Arcam use a Brown Burr DACs but not sure which?

Thoughts appreciated

Thanks

Hi Darren,

I've not used the DAC+DSP yet - I am thinking about a project with it - but I have used Hifiberry DAC HATs and the Beocreate module, which uses the same DSP chip as the DAC+DSP. The boards are well engineered and I'm of the view that all competently engineered DACs are transparent and therefore sound the same. The DAC+DSP is an inexpensive way of doing room correction.

If you are comfortable using REW and the Linux command line (a little) I'm sure you will have no problems setting up the DSP.

Using the same DAC chip doesn't guarantee identical performance.

If I'm not mistaken the HiFiBerry uses a chip designed for portable devices like smartphones and file players. The Arcam uses one of BB's high performance chips, the PCM1794.

.

The analogue stage and power supply have probably more impact than the chip and in my experience those are the Berry's weak spots (I owned the DAC+ Pro for a while).

.

I would say that they don't play in the same league but the Berry is good value for money. I replace mine with a Sabre-based Audiophonics HAT DAC which was somewhat better (as good as an iFi iDAC).

Bobovox, tuga, many thanks for your replies.

Good point on the different BB DAC.

Still having a think
