Arkiv rebuild---might chance it .

I think I might  succumb to curiosity and send one of my Old  Arkiv Bs to Goldring for a rebuild.

With an aluminium cantilever & vital stylus,  it will effectively come back as a mark 1 Arkiv  [....no bad thing perhaps ...as I'd previously been happy with the old Arkiv &  wasn't 100% won over by the Boron when it came out .]

It'll cost about £400 ....the price of a decent moving magnet . If it doesn't quite hit the spot for my tastes, it should  sell to recover much of the cost.

So why not give it a go  ?

It's challenge is simply to maintain and build on the immense musical enjoyment that my humble K18II is currently still surprising me with.

Might be a month or so before I ship it off ....so we'll see in due course.

Well I'm  looking  at it like this.

We know that David of Goldring has been doing these rebuilds for a long number of years .

He uses sensible parts & materials, sympathetic to the original design ... so we should avoid the issue of the rebuilt cartridge coming back as a totally  different animal  to the one we originally chose and enjoyed.

For £400 It doesn't have to sound exactly  like a brand  new Arkiv .

It  just needs to be a very good £400 cartridge,  at the same time  maintaining  Linn's characteristically  musical strengths .

I'm quite confident that it will achieve at least that and hopeful that it will achieve a whole lot more .

Either  way , a rebuild every year or two won't cost me much more than keeping a good MM on the road with new styli.

[And as I have a couple of them, I can send one away with the other still in use ....

...but I'm getting ahead of myself now.   I haven't got the £400 past the dragon indoors just yet :D   ]

Late last year I sent my Arkiv MkI to Goldring for a full rebuild and I can vouch on David's work. I can't remember the Arkiv sounding so good!

Yeah, and you should hear my Mrs explaining that curtains have a very important acoustic engineering function.... and are thus of just as much benefit to me. :(

She's far too clever for me :D .

[So how's the Slipsik 7 settling in ?   Still sounding better by the day I should imagine ]
