I'm in the middle of a Roon 14 day free trial. I've been trying to get the following to work but no luck so far. I'd like to use Linn's Songcast application, running on my laptop, to cast audio from the laptop to a Roon endpoint .  The setup I have here uses a Raspberry Pi + Ropieee as the endpoint. If it was going to work I'd expect to see "Ropieee" (the Roon zone name) to be showing up in the Songcast Receiver drop down list, but it's not there unfortunately.

Anyone been able to get anything like this to work?

I'm pretty sure songcast will only cast to a Linn device.

Actually, come to think of it, if you load an OpenHome player on the Pi that should work. No idea how that would fit in with the Ropieeeeeeeeeeee..... though (does it really need that many eeees? ;))

I saw a comment on the Roon community to the effect that they dream of adding a feature that would like Songcast be able to send inputs such as a turntable to all other endpoints.

They call this "Input Device"

Generally, I find that a downside of Roon is that it can't, or least I haven't managed it, switch a DSM to other sources such as TV or turntable. It is clumsy to have exit Roon and resort to Kazoo or the infra red remote.

Yes, Songcast is written to open standards so should work with anything that's OpenHome compatibie e.g. an Auralic streamer. In theory, any of the Upmpdcli / MPD based renderers for the RPi should be configurable to support Songcast (although maybe with a bit of linux tinkering). See here:

I'm interested in how / if this could work with Roon though.

I'm almost certain that I'll be keeping roon at the end of the trial. If they can implement a feature like this that would be brilliant. I know I could drop in and out of roon, drop into Kazoo, etc but having it all seamlessly built into the same UI would be far nicer, especially if it allows me to cast not only to my Linn DS but to any roon endpoint in the house that would suit me perfectly.

Roon is a way of controlling, and directing your music library. It is not a way to control the functions of your DSM. You have other software for that.

That is exactly the point I was making, although Roon have ambitions to do both

I think to do this, Linn DS/DSM’s would need to be ‘Roon Ready’, and adopt Roon’s RAAT streaming protocols. Linn DS/DSM players are approved by Roon as ‘approved DAC’s’ rather than Roon-Ready network players.

It’s unlikely that you would get an answer from Linn by posting on here, but if you check-out the Roon Community, there is a Linn section where you could ask the question, and probably get an answer from Roon themselves.
