superfi gone under?

Super Wammer

I bought my first "real" (some will scoff!) hifi = Arcam A85/P85 from a private seller in rural Lincolnshire; he had bought it new from Superfi in Lincoln and then changed to Electrocompaniet. The A85 failed; I took it to Superfi in Lincoln and they gave it a thorough service and replaced the fuse, all for for free. It failed again, I retuned it again and they realised the originak and first replacement fuses had been under-specced, sorted it again (referring to fuse spec this time rather than eplacing like for like), and again did so for free. Fantastic support for a non-customer... though this may explain why they went under!

Much missed as they say.

Shame. The Leeds shop gave me my first introduction to "high end " CD by offering an ex- demo Marantz CD 17 for 300 squids(RRP 800). In champagne gold too!

It was the centrepiece of my system, until some a*****e broke into my house and stole the lot.(MF amp, Tannoy speakers)

Fortunately I was insured and got a good settlement, eventually. Some clown from the loss adjuster attempted to convince me to have a Marantz CD 5000 as replacement, claiming that the only difference was the CD text feature!

To cut a long story short, my source is now a Marantz CD 17 mark 2.

we are lucky in brum , we have loads of hi fi stores

.... the little audio co in the jewellery quarter ,

I recently bought my Technics SL1200G from David at the Little Audio Company. I live in London, but he was on AVforums and I thought I would try him out over my local Richer Sounds. He was really good, great customer service and support.

The last Superfi I visited was in Hull, well over twenty years ago. I'm not entirely sure if I ever bought anything from them. Unless it was cables, I very much doubt it. As far as I know, the Hull branch shut down several years back. They always struck me as being Richer Sounds without the deals.

I walked past my local SuperFi shop today and all the stock has been cleared out completely emptied. I thought they might have a sale but seems not.

Their website is unreachable.

Crikey, what a coincidence: I bought my first complete system for next to nothing from a complete a******e in a pub near Leeds and it was just like yours! *

(*poor taste joke)

My guess is that someone like Richer Sounds will have been lined up to take the lot before, or just after, Superfi pulled the plug. A nice, easy, one hit transaction with logistics sorted, at a stupidly low price but who wants hassle when you're shutting up shop?

I seem to remember Superfi shops getting a bad press a couple of years ago? Or maybe that was someone from Sevenoaks Hi Fi slagging them off? Can’t remember...........nurse!

Ultimately the only bricks & mortar  dealers who  survive will be the true specialists,  who sell and install a high  proportion of expensive high end kit [with good margins]  to a relatively low number of clients .

They simply  don't need the footfall numbers or  numeric customer base  that a traditional high street shop requires to make a living.

The best ones still carry and demonstrate good inexpensive  Hi Fi as well ...and aren't too far  up their own arses :D

The guys who continue to do a really good job can still thrive ...because the best route  to getting a really good sound at home is via competently demonstrated and  installed systems.   And you can't get that on Amazon ...even with Prime.

What a shame, another one gone. Superfi used to have some cracking deals.....but it obviously wasn't enough to compete with the internet. RIP
