DAC is important, but does the digital source matter?

The point is can you still discern the difference when you don’t know which is playing, if you can, reliably then you are on to something and can try and determine why.

Hi Keith....

Small correction, I was using foobar to run via usb out of the headless gigabitbrix pc. And had subsequently tried volumio, before trying roon.

But having heard extensively to a select few tracks for over a week, and then shifting to roon. Iam confident I can make out the difference and identify the Metrum Ambre in a back to back comparison. But unfortunately there is no way of doing it right now.

LOL, great thread. :nup:

IME it's pretty easy to tell the difference between DACs, although most of the modern ones based on ESS Sabre chipsets sound the same (shite.)  All the Chord ones I have ever heard have also sounded shite - maybe it's just me.

Also IME if you have a DAC that works properly, it's not so easy to tell the difference between digital sources.  Recording quality tends to dominate.

And Keith, get off your high horse.  I remember you trying to sell me Acoustic Systems resonators, FFS.

I presume the inference is that all 'good' DACs out to be transparent and therefore sound the same.

Although I veer towards the 'many things do not make a difference' school of thought, I agree with Menin on this one. I have had here more than a couple of supposedly high-end DACs and they certainly sounded different. And not always in a good way.

What do you mean by "half a beard?"

A 'tache?

Beard on one half the face?

Somebody giving second thoughts about covering up their partner's sexuality?

Do we need Urban Dictionary?

If you had ever spoken to me you would know I am the least ‘salesman’ like salesman.

My only aim is to improve the sound of your system.
