The lowest Cost System you will ever hear

Recommended Posts

The lowest Cost System you will ever hear, consists of:

Turntable - Mantra Manticore TT (originally with Joe Grado Sig 8M cart and Mission LC tone arm (cost $800 in 1985 with tradein of NAD5120). Now has $160 Denon 103 mc cart (bought 2yrs ago new). New belt 5 years ago $60 buck- hows that for low cost running.

Speakers - AR93's, found left on side of street, nil cost. I refubed them with two 8" Vifa drivers I bought for $100 20 years ago and replaced one tweeter with old stock orig unit $20.

Amps- Nad 1020B/2140 $200 & 3155 (used with 2140 as bridged monoblock with 2140) $170

CD - Rotel RDV-1080 $100

Oh and Nak RX303 $220 (and it works and still flips tapes)

Certainly possible and fun to put something  together that sounds properly nice on a shoe string.

well gives us an exapmple then of what you call good sound for low cost in analog, that does include speakers and not some silly digital system thing with headphones

Ah also note the figures I quote above are Oz dollars - so half it for pounds

at the wam show one year , they had a system for 100 quid that sounded half decent. it was a challenge to see what you could get for 100 quid

I did this years ago as a challenge for Hi-Fi World magazine:

Dual CS505-3 turntable from eBay - £31

Yamaha AX-300 amplifier from the car boot sale - £12

Wharfedale Diamond speakers from my local dump - £5

Total = £48 and it sounded bloody superb!

my personal experience of diamond speakers is that the x-over is so intrusive I had to turn the hifi off and watch tv until I had taken out the xover.

I do therefore find the adjective 'superb' somewhat surprising

Goldring Lenco GL69 with Nagoaka MP11  £25

Pioneer A400   £40

Snell J type11   £100

All bought locally, through word of mouth.

Sounds remarkably good.

If you take out the crossover, they’ll sound even worse!

I bet you £50 they dont

I’ll bet you £100 they do. They’re there for a reason, you know, not just for the hell of it.

Without them, you’ll be listening to a lot of out-of-bandwidth distortion from the drivers. At least, until the point the tweeter burns out...
