Downtempo Electronica

Recommended Posts

Super Wammer

Downtempo electronica I hear you say? Well, its a broad church and one that can very much cover all manner of electronic styles - from ambient, chillout, downtempo, psychill, psybient, dub, trance...  the list can go on and on!

After chatting with Steve/Clubsport911 via PM about the mixes I put together (the eagle eyed amongst you may have seen and clicked on the link in my signature) we are also aware that there may be others here on the WAM with a similar interest in the more laid back types of electronic music, especially when it comes to discovering new artists. For inspiration, I tend to listen to several of the internet radio streams via:

  • Digitally Imported via http://www.di.fm including Chillout, Chillout Dreams, Psychill, Downtempo Lounge, Chillstep and Atmospheric Beats. Lower quality streams are free, but if you're a paid up subscriber, 320k streams are available.
  • SomaFM via http://somafm.com Groove Salad, Space Station Soma and Beat Blender.
  • ChromonovaFM Chillout channel via http://www.chromanova.de/home.htm

I also have around 100+ albums downloaded via Bandcamp https://bandcamp.com/orbscure and this is a great resource for small independent labels and not only provide good quality flac files, some are also providing 24bit flac files of new and old material all with the option to listen before you buy.

I try not to settle on any one artist, I'm constantly on the lookout for new material. At present, AmBeam, Astronaut Ape, Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Data Rebel, Puremusic, Dense, Astropilot, State Azure, Cosmic Replicant, HUVA Network, S1gns of L1fe and Ascendant are floating my boat, but that can change from week to another. Old favourites like the Orb and Banco de Gaia are still as important today as they were back in the early 1990's... and even artists like Fortran 5, Eat Static and Aphex Twin have been known to show a more relaxed downtempo side from time to time. The Warp and Planet Dog labels back in those heady days were at the cutting edge of the broader genre, especially with their Artificial Intelligence, Feed Your Head and Trance Europe Express compilations.. so the purpose of this thread, should you choose to accept the invitation, is to share your old and new downtempo electronica with the WAM masses. This thread will self destruct at some point in the future, but until it does, turn up the volume, turn off the lights and enjoy the music :)

How about Ulrich Schnauss?

This is one of my favourites

Its one of my top 10 and he's a great remixer to boot. I've been after this on vinyl for ages but they rarely appear and when they do, they're around £60! :o

Ulrich S - top man

My favourite is this. I have many a fond memory of running on cold winter nights, or early mornings whilst training - seeing the stars blazing in the sky....

And... my absolute current top running tune is this - aural porn

Justin Robertson's The Love Movement is a DIfm Chillout favourite and as for Owsey, he has been a very recent discovery for me with the Bandcamp Full Discography for £10.80 being an absolute steal. He can be closer to ambient than downtempo at times, but when he gets it right, boy, does he hit the spot.

This hit the spot with me tonight (not so much the video I might add) and has been added to the mp3 file of tunes for a future robots dream. Eskadet is another great artist in his own right but also produces some fantastic remixes too :)

Feeling a bit sorry for myself with a stinking hangover... so here are today's selection :)

First up is Show by Andy Hunter, taken from his 2002 LP Exodus and appear on my Do Robots Dream [session 013]

Next up... the Orb with Backside of the Moon [under water deep space] remixed and featuring Steve Hillage. Taken from the superb Aubrey Mixes, The Ultraworld Excursions from 1991, it was only available for one day before being deleted.
