Classical Club #14 Martinu symphony No6

Recommended Posts

Bohuslav Martinu's symphonies can be a challenge, but this set is excellent.

Symphony No 6 is my choice here:  Fantaisies Symphoniques.

When I first heard this, I was smitten!

From the notes: Begun in 1951, but did not reach a final form until May 1953.  The original concept included three pianos, but these were abandoned. Also its original title of Symphonie Fantastique was jettisoned in deference to Berlioz.  It remains one of Martinu's most popular orchestral compositions.

Not heard any Martinu before - will give this a try.
Martinu wasn't a part of the 20th century twelve tone classical movement was he?  -  most of that stuff can be 'difficult' to listen to.

No.  His music is much overlooked;  again by the BBC unless a given presenter who favours such pushes for it, as they do come up once in a while.  His is a distinct sound all it's own and should appeal, seeing your own choices of C20th music on here.
