They sound great but the paint job is awful and they did not sell at the recent Audiojumble because of it. so it has to go.

Yes it will - its paint & varnish stripper bought from Johnstone's trade decorating decorating centre. You'll probably need three or four goes if you're stripping paint & varnish, but its quite gentle so doesn't harm the veneer.  I'll post a pick of it later.
