In my experience, the A to D and D to A is not always transparent.  A simple measurement (called "listening") can demonstrate this, so cheap isn't always cheerful, but you probably don't have to spend huge amounts either.

I'm with some of the others here - only address stuff below 100Hz or maybe 120Hz tops - don't stray into the vocal zone and often a system that doesn't have any room interaction above 120Hz sounds distinctly dull and unrealistic.

As for the temporal effects of notches to address room modes - well, decent systems don't have that problem, although there may be a touch of phase distortion brought in by a notch where the "corners" at the start and end of the notch are too tight.

Its not the system, its the room, when it hits resonance it continues to ring.

Serge was suggesting the notches in the system output will cause temporal problems.

Ah sorry, not how I read it, no FIR based systems wont have any issues with that provided sufficient taps.
