Celef RT-1 speakers

Recommended Posts

Super Wammer

Some of you may remember that before Pro-Ac, Stuart Tyler made and sold Celef speakers. (originally he used Celestion & KEF drivers, hence the name Celef.)

The RT-1's were Celef's absolute top of the range 3 way passives around 1979/1980, listed at £1200 (my monthly teacher's pay at the time was around £290 so that puts this in context...) with an ATC studio SB234 bass unit, a KEF B200 (SP1036 large magnet) midrange in an open backed separate compartment, and a Decca DK30 ribbon tweeter.

You wouldn't believe the clarity of this system ....I'm sure this was a key design criteria....the midrange stunned me in particular.

They were, without a doubt, the best passive speakers I have ever owned.

I had pairs 011/012 originally which I had for 20years, and sold for what I THOUGHT was something better. I was wrong, but was lucky enough to find 023/024 when I realised my mistake. Still have them.

That's about the limit of the number that were produced....in two figures....

The only other 3 guys I have come across with these were a guy in Wales, a guy on the south coast, and someone selling a pair on eBay who had (I think inherited) 3 pairs in a surround sound setup. OMG! That must have been something.

We're still here dad, in the garage....

Please plug something into us....it's so boring out here and it gets really cold in the winter...

I know we're old, but boy can we sing....

Remember that really well integrated, focused, large soundstage.  Bass powerful & clear.   Midrange clear, smooth, open.  Treble the best you have ever heard.

Remember it, daddy?

Dad? You there?

Love, 023 and 024. x

Guest MJ.

That is irresponsible parenting if ever I heard it.

You really do need to bring them in from the cold and play something nice with them.

Wow, I'd love to hear these! I have a pair of Celef PE1s, which I love, so I can only imagine what these must be like.

They ARE fantastic, Nick. Really.

Maybe I'll dig'em out, do'em up and bring them to Scalford next year.

I really wanted to bring my DIY ATC150ASLT's, but they are nearly 100kg each and that put me off even trying.

I'll run the ATC's in this year, and think about what to do.....

SP1039 would be the correct mid unit.

I regret selling mine, kept them for years, were my Dad's.

They're in good hands mate!

I'm the guy who bought 023 and 024 off you!  You said your son had been using them upstairs and you had some big Pro-Acs in your own system...

Here's one of them!

it's quite obvious now after you've mentioned it, but I didn't realise that!

And if Stuart Tyler made it I don't doubt its good.

I posted this a few months back: the Celef brand briefly reborn! The pedant in me can't resist pointing out that it's Stewart not Stuart.

These speakers are really coming on song now, fantastic things. A Celef bake-off might be a bit ambitious but it's a nice thought to retire on… g'night!

Oh yes, I (we probably) knew that but just an error, which I clearly followed. Easily done and no harm done.

Sorry Stewart if you're reading, :) and if you ever need another pair of ears to evaluate/tune your speakers, please contact me. But you seem to have been doing a grand job at it alone for some time now. But remember I asked first! :D
