Those drivers without road tax are likely to not bother with insurance either. Estimates are in the region of 1 million vehicles annually.

MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) has confirmed that the UK’s 1.5 millionth uninsured vehicle has been seized in Haringey, North London.  The 23 year-old male was caught by the police driving his Vauxhall Corsa without insurance.

Who'd have thought it?

With the new Top Gear due in early March it is ironic that the introduction of the new Tax Category will raise the cost for a lot of their cars from £500 to £2,000.....not a bad increase.

That doesn't seem fair on drivers of older cars.

My father's car costs him over 500 quid a year to tax, but a brand new one of the same spec / emissions would cost only 140 ?

That's exactly what this government is doing.....tell him to treat himself to a new one :^

(BTW life's not fair :D).

.... The addition 310 pounds for 5 years, over and above the standard co2 emissions road tax, for 'premium' cars with a list over 40,000GBP, is going to bite some, the success of Jaguar Land Rover, not least.

One may expect to see manufacturers changing their UK pricing and specification levels to suit.  Or just getting creative with 'dealer options' that can be bought and financed outside the initial registration invoice amount.  With increasing software option-based electronic gadgets, that may be an easy dodge for the Treasury's clumsy bullets.

Probably mean that residuals for some late model cars, may improve too.
