2017 Scalford classic system from the past fantasy room

Recommended Posts

A tardis is placed at the Wam's disposal for the 2017 show, and you are nominated to specify and retrieve a classic system from the past, consumer or pro.

Always hankered after hearing the HQD rig, myself:

And it'd be interesting to see how this stacked up against modern kit....surprisingly well would be my prediction.

What would you choose?

KEF KM1s at BBC Maida Vale

I visited the studios just after they had been replaced by the pretty impressive PMC BB5 XBDAs, so missed hearing the KM1s.

I always coveted the Quad system, and simultaneously regretted they were out of my financial reach . I never actually heard a complete system at the time, but always wanted one  . Now I could afford one, they would probably be disappointing. Sign of the the times I suppose, late 60's, early 70's :dunno:.

Him - Puff-Puff, "These electrostatic loudspeakers sound spiffing, all I need now is a Transcriptors Hydrolic Reference Turntable":geek:

Her - Thinks "WTF did I marry this boring twat, and why are we staring at the radiator"

When the Transcriptors turntable came out, it was featured on the cover of one of the HiFi mags, New HiFi Sound I think. I borrowed Dad's car and went with a schoolfriend to Studio 99 at Swiss Cottage to see it.

To their credit, they gave us as two obviously penniless students a very decent demo. This was at the time when turntables didn't sound different, they just had to go round at the right speed, and that one was very impressive indeed.

Later on, I bought the Fluid Arm, to go on my Connoisseur BD1

Some Snell As maybe, or something ultra rare like some German Cinema Horns?

:dunno:

You're welcome to pop round here if you fancy having a listen to my A's. :)

Well, if you can cope with a Beogram 4002 instead of a 4000, I'd be happy to bring that very setup along! I've also got the Acoustical-based Beogram 3000 that was meant to go with the amp and tuner.

Would love to hear master tape playback as here...well, it's fantasy, right?

I'd love to hear that too.

If only to see what all the fuss the magazines made was about.
