Actives I have owned span just about the whole Meridian line , ATC 50's and 100's , Linns , Genelec, KRK, Mackie, behringer, linkwitz orion , home builds etc

Owned tons of passives too.. and have to say that at the end of it all with regard to sound quality , neither is a clear winner.

Very true...

Any impressions and comparisons from within your actives journey?

Not actives per se (as these do not have active (or any) crossover), but these have some characteristics of actives (e.g. good phase response) due to direct amp to driver connection. A couple of speakers with a single full-range driver.

A feature I think is particularly useful with actives, which is unfortunately a rare one, is signal-sensing power.

One of the disadvantages of actives is that they need to be powered on/off so in most cases it is another two power switches to bother about. With signal sensing power one does not have to bother even for multiroom actives as power can be controlled by activating the zones from the control app. Only a handful of models like e.g. some Genelcs, AVI DM5 etc (as well as many wireless/network actives) have signal sensing power.

A workaround is add-on power controls, which can be achieved by:

- an IR remote controlled power strips or sockets (a few quid from ebay or Amazon, e.g. Saveasocket). These are usually programmable to work with existing IR remotes.

- an RF remote controlled power strips or sockets (again, a few quid, e..g Energenie). these require a separate RF remote.

- load sensing power strips (many products currently available), i.e. they would switch your actives on/off as you switch another component on/off. These do not require a separate controller, just need to have the right sensitivity to react correctly to the load of your master component

Be good to collate a range of Active speakers in one post with digital inputs Alma ... and keep adding to it as you find more .... great thread BTW!

Good idea, will do. But I need help. I will start a post listing those and will add to it as others point out such speakers.

I think another good round up list would be of actives which are part of multiroom systems.

This is a placeholder for this list.

Closed propriatory systems:

I think another good round up list would be of actives which are part of multiroom systems.....

It has become more complicated than that.

There are those actives which are part of a multi-room system, such as Sonos, Bluesound etc, but there are now some "HiFi" or "Audiophile grade" wireless actives appearing, which can be used in a multiroom system , e.g. Elac Air, Dynaudio Xeo and Focus xD etc.

Yes, we can cover all of these, making distinction between closed propriatory systems like Sonos, ones that can be part of other propriatory systems (like B&W or others using AirPlay) and open systems (like DLNA? - I am a bit weak on those so would appreciate help from the more knowledgeable wammers).

Here is another oddball.

pdp-top-ue18-desktop.png

pdp-feature2-ue18.png

http://pro.ultimateears.com/products/custom-monitors/for-audiophiles/ue-18-pro

There are many multi-driver earphones, some having as many as 8 drivers, but they all have passive (and faily basic) crossovers. With this news (or rather rumour):

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/11/27/iphone-7-no-3-5mm-headphone-jack-lightning/

a fully active multi-driver earphone with active crossover and dedicated amps becomes entirely feasible. The lightning connector/adapters is full of powered electronics already and the new headphone lightning connector/interface can feasibly have a chip with crossover, amps and even DSP.

I predict a (super high end) first ever fully active headphone appearing soon.
