Active Speakers Reference Thread

Recommended Posts

Hello, All,

I propose to keep a thread dedicated to actives. I am a fan and user myself and know many are also interested in them. I see it as a reference thread, containing mainly reference info and product news about (domestic) actives, system configurations based on actives (sources, setting up, control, advance features), user reviews, user systems (pics and descriptions), tips, links to useful reading and general discussion about actives.

Let's also try to avoid silly arguments, keep it collaborative, informative and civilised.

Let's start by rounding up the current interesting offerings:

- Brand, link to manufacturer's site

- very brief overview of active product range (e.g. 'both domestic and pro actives, full range of sizes, some models with DSP/room correction' or 'limited domestic model range, extensive pro range'

- price range

- photo of typical speaker

- any other details (optional)

I will start by putting some initial posts over the next couple of weeks.

I hope we can turn in into a long life, useful, informative/explorative thread.

Currently using Acoustic Energy AE22 for general music listening despite their Pro roots.

Totally blown away by their musical cohesion and sheer enjoyment factor. My all time Audio Bargain!

Been very tempted to up the stakes to something like Unity Audio The Rocks mk2 or AVI DM10's...

Copied from the other Active thread

As mentioned they are the M3-8. Absolutely loving these speakers for what is beer money. This is my first encounter with active speakers and really didn't know what to expect and have to say I've not heard better, really remarkable especially at the price.

The specs listed by "vacdac" are from the M-Audio website and as regards the amplification specs they are incorrect, should be : Low frequency = 150W Mid = 30W and High = 20W

As studio monitor speakers they do everything that you would expect of a very good domestic hifi speaker and more. They have a fantastic 3 dimensional soundstage and exceptionally detailed without being any way harsh or in your face. I think they are sounding better each day as they break in.

Edit just to say that they don't have auto input sensing/power down standby

Domestic and pro speakers and subs with simple (no DSP) but high performance designs, in house drivers. Largest models have outboard amps. Spotless reputation. Prices here http://atcforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=672

A small-scale manufacturer. Currently only two models + sub in the range, with intermittent production runs and direct web only sales. Unique as offer built in remote pre amp with DAC and 8th order crossover at very reasonable price and wood veneer finish.

Some models can have active configuration (wiht external crossovers and amps).

Just a small correction to your Linn comment as follows:

Most (including all current) Linn stereo speakers can be configured for active use with external crossovers and amps. Some models (e.g. Akubarik and 350) have the option of active versions with amps and crossovers built into the cabinets. The speakers with the Kiko are active only and dedicated to the Kiko. Series 5 speakers are only available fully active but can only be used with Exakt compatible Linn sources.

I like this thread, especially having just dipped my toes into active speakers with some ESI Unik 08's.

Good work:^
