For mny years I have been trying to learn Czech. I have loads of textbooks and courses and am able to make myself understood in Čechia when we go on holiday. It is a difficult language to master but I do want to become more fluent in it. My first book was "Czech in 3 Months" - lol! I have since bought other courses and all of them have good features and bad ones. This year I was recommended an app called "Duolingo" and it really is helping me increase my knowledge and building on the foundation I already have, although I started on it as a beginner. Last weekend I attended "Duocon London" the first conference held by Duolingo and it was interesting to hear from the founder and the "team" who design the courses - there are many language courses available on Duolingo. (My wife is studying Czech and Arabic.) The original idea was to make language education fun and - most importantly - free. Yes you can subscribe and there are benefits to that but all the courses are actually free. Another site is czechclass101.com - mostly free but they do try to get you to subscribe. As an addition to Duolingo i find it very helpful. I would like opportunities to speak czech one-on-one and there are teachers in London (where I live) but the hourly rate is usually about £16 per hour! Are there sites where one can practice for free? Is anyone else earning a language? If so, what have you found to effective?
