  1. Really nice example. Has some small yellow marks on top from the feet of the Quad 34 pre-amp - may be able to remove them with the right cleaner. But all working perfectly and sounds great - have been using with my Quad 34 (also for sale - see other post) and an Apple Express. £215 ono Happy to demo. Thanks for looking. For Sale: Quad 34 Pre-amp

Lovely condition. Recently had a service and a minor repair with Quad (receipt in photos). Accepts modern sources - I've been running an Apple Express into it via a DAC, and sounds great! Will include a bunch of connecting cables (also in photos), and comes with original box and packaging. £235 ono. I'm also selling a Quad 405 Mk I and a Moving Coil Module - see other posts. Thanks for looking. Nick Below is a link to more photos. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmbZoBon
  3. Hi all While I’ve enjoyed reading the WAM on and off for a few years this is my first post and hoping I can tap into some of the expertise on here. I’m in the process of getting my first proper hi-fi system having previously had to integrate into my AV set-up. The equipment I have so far is; Quad 909 power amp, Quad Qc 24 valve pre amp (with phono stage), Quad CDP-2 and Michell Gyrodec TT. However, I’m getting stuck when looking at speakers. I’m limited to standmounters which will be placed in my lounge measuring approx 7.1m x 5.7m (altho it is open-plan to a dining area and then kitchen meaning a large open space). Positioning is likely to be close to the rear wall behind the main seating position. My budget is up to £700 and was looking mainly s/h. Options I’d considered were B&W CM5 S2, Kef R300, Spendor S3/5R2 and then the new(ish) Quad S2s. I am sorely tempted by the latter given the great reviews they’ve received together with the fact the rest of the system is Quad based. My concern however is that they might just get lost in the room and lack impact, which may be a risk in all of these. To mitigate this I do have a REL Quake SW that I could also deploy in this set-up (altho it would need to be shared by the AV system in my lounge). One final point it would be good to get guidance on is streaming. I have all my music ripped to Apple Lossless and stored on a Mac mini and I’d like to be able to stream my library to this system in a cheap and efficient way. I do have the option of a Sonos connect but I’m not sure if that is overkill. I’ve been at this for a couple of months now so any and all thoughts / recommendations would be more than welcome so I can finally get on with listening to some music! Thanks
  4. As a long-standing user of Quad's electrostatic 'speakers, I've been excited to see their recent valve amps. I first began my audio journey with a pair of Quad 2 monoblocks - lucky me! A few years ago I switched to digital and began to use AVI's active speakers, but now I'm in a bigger building, with more acoustic choices, I've switched back to the Quad electrostatics, which I kept hold of all the while! Meanwhile, while my attention was elsewhere, Quad have developed and launched a range of valve-based amps that is almost bewildering in its scope! So, to business... most of my music is on my Mac and I have well-established audio distribution by wi-fi - has anyone used the highly wi-fi competant VA-One with electrostatics? If so, do tell all - is it a good match?

    SALE Quad 306 Power Amplifier

Quad 306 Power Amplifier Classic British power amplifier from Quad. Designed and built in the UK. Very compact but has plenty of power for most speakers. Original output caps have been replaced due to age with Kendeil caps (very highly rated) Also the old original binding posts have also been replaced with high quality modern ones. This should give many years of trouble free performance. These British built Quads are getting rarer now so grab it while you can. Partnered perfectly with NVA P50 passive Pre-Amp which gave an open neutral sound with no harshness at the top end. Couple of things to note – it seems that the top of casework has been polished but not very well. The trip switch has glue on it – it feels okay but I have never had to use it. Couple of paint chips on the heat sink. (See Pics) None of this affects the performance of the amp. £199 – ONO, Collection Preferred, Greater Manchester.
  12. This is now SOLD This is an extremely high quality CD player, with digital inputs, that has fixed and variable outputs. These retail new for £2500. There are 3 TOSLINK digital inputs, together with 2 RCA coaxial, so a whole plethora of components can be accomodated. I've been using the DAC with my Bluesound Vault and it really transforms the sound - taking Tidal to a very high quality source. Asynchronous USB is also available. I suspect that this would make a very good stand alone CD transport. Analogue outputs on balanced and single ended. Fixed or variable. Digital out on Toslink, RCA, BNC and AES/EBU The CD section is absolutely top class. Quad have really made the transport and drawer mechanism something really special. The drive is to all intents and purposed silent when in operation. From the manufacurer's web site: "The Platinum DMP (Digital Media Player) incorporates a high-quality CD transport constructed from die-cast aluminium and ABS compound, its CD tray supported by high-grade steel rods running through sintered bronze bearings. This construction reduces noise and vibration through critical damping of the mechanical components, allowing the laser to read the disc with unerring accuracy. From the CD mechanism, data is passed to twin Cirrus Logic 24-bit/192kHz Delta-Sigma D/A converters. This DAC configuration utilises the D/A converters in double differential mode with a dedicated D/A converter to each channel for optimum stereo performance. In addition to CD, the DAC circuit can handle audio data from external digital music sources, converting data of up to 24bit/192kHz with minimum jitter and maximum accuracy." Far in front of the CDP2, Elie, etc, IMO. The DAC section alone is excellent value. This is in perfect working order and very good physical condition. I bought it ex display from an authorised UK dealer. in August of this year I can provide a copy of the purchase receipt if required. I've registered it with Quad, but don't know if the warranty is transferable (often it's not). It comes with original box, packaging and substantial remote control. It comes from a smoke and pet free home and from a very careful owner who looks after his kit One sold on ebay recently for over £1,100. My price is £895, plus £25 UK carriage

    Stacked!

So last night I finally managed to get to Stevied's to hear his stacked Quad 57's properly. Lets get the obvious bit out of the way... they ain't pretty. At the moment, the top set and bottom set have mismatched covers and the frames are pretty workmanlike. They are big and Steve has to move one around to get in and out of his room. But they sound really nice. No they don't plumb the depths like his old Amphions, but they are balanced, they have enough bass for Steve's room and with the right recordings they are very lifelike. Imaging is not as precise as single 57's, but that also means you can move your head when you listen. We listened to a mixture of music, from B52s, Prodigy, Eagles, War of the Worlds (yes, I tried my usual track, and again, it revealed just how good his Kline pre-amp and the Quads are at producing the atmosphere of the the recording and Richard Burton's voice). They aren't the best speakers for dance music, but it was perfectly listenable and we had the volume up to decent levels. The main thing for me compared with the Amphions (and the Allisons as well) was that I happily listened to the Quads quite loud for the whole evening. They aren't fatiguing and they aren't dominated by the bass. On the (cliched but useful) Hell Freezes Over version of Hotel California, that concert drum doesn't shake the floor, but neither does it come to dominate the recording as it does with other speakers. You listen to the way instruments move and are played, the dynamics are much more obvious. On Eve of the War, the lead in to the opening of the cylinder had so much more detail than I get at home (to be fair, I use a CD and Steve had it on vinyl so that may have been part of the reason) This is the best sound I have heard at Steves, well balanced and full of life. Stacked Quads are definitely something worth hearing. Pictures are a problem - my phone doesnt have a wide enough lens to get them both in! But I'll post the one pic I did take shortly. The rest of Steves system - Garrad 401 (?301) with Morch arm and fancy cart, Kline phono and pre and Beam Echo EL34 powers, makes a good front end. All together it makes a very natural sound that I could listen to for hours and that is ideal for me. On a side note, we tried my Chromecast Audio and marvelled yet again at how a £30 gizmo the size of a hockey puck can sound that good whilst giving access to basically every piece of music going... Steve's next purchase is probably going to be his cheapest.
