  1. Few days ago we listened the speakers Elac Vela 403 and 407 with Mcintosh 5300, Mastersound Box 2018 and Luxman 505 II. The cables were Vertere. Compared to the older 40X series, the new ones were softer and sweeter in the top registers and both had more bass. In total they sounded more relaxed with tons of details and nice space. We started with the Mc 5300 and Vela 403, but then we switched to the Mastersound. Oh, what a jump. The whole system became alive, with much better resolution, more 3d sounding, better controlled bass and cleaner voice. No question, it is a better amp. Continuing with the 407, we received a netter bass and soundstage. Then, we matched it with the Luxman 505. To my ears it sounded the best. One day I buy one. The soundstage became a bit narrower but more organized than with Mastersound, and still much better than 5300. The resolution was great, it sounded very lifelike, neutral, rounded. The piano and the voices were perfect, the sound was like in a flow. The Elacs were so transparent that we could immediately tell the differences between the amps. The systems sounded well with everything: Karen Souza, Jazz+Az, Rammstein, Nirvana, Vangelis. I wanted to see what could be my next speakers, but at the end the 505 impressed me the most. If you have a possibility, I would recommend to listen it and also the Mastersound (tube amp).

  3. The reviews seem a bit of a barren desert at present, so i thought I’d just write a short review/thoughts on these two components. I’ve now had these in my system for a couple of months, having bought them new from that very nice organisation Audio Emotion. So, plenty of time to get acquainted with them, functionally and sonically. Both of these units came in excellent packaging, complete with double boxes. They look and handle like the premium products that they are. In general the finish and fit is excellent. These are designed to offer great performance, but in a relatively small package, hence they are a fair bit smaller than might be expected. This suits my needs very nicely as it would many others, I suspect. Having said that, these should not be labelled ‘lifestyle products’ (i.e. potentially all design with little content) as they do offer very high quality performance. The DA200 is a DAC, which is also a pre amp, that also has a quality headphone amplifier. (my Beyer T70ps, AKG K701s and Audeze EL8s all sound very good, with no signs at all of the amp struggling properly to drive them) The DAC used is aBurr-Brown PCM1792A, 24/192Khz, but only 96kHz on USB. Analogue output is Class A. Luxman make the similarity in design and performance to their D05 player. Having never heard that myself, I can’t comment. It does though highlight the care that has gone in to the implementation of the DAC and the pre. There is no remote control, which may be a deal breaker for some. There is a display window which shows sample rate on digital, but which goes blank if using analogue inputs. There are coaxial and Toslink inputs in addition to USB. Unusually, there are also 2 analogue inputs, meaning that this can act as the heart of most systems. It needs to be noted that, whilst there are balanced and SE outputs, variable out is only available on SE. It can operate in fixed mode on both XLR and SE. The M200 is a power amplifier, with a pre (can be set to be bypassed) Hence this could be used as a single source integrated. There are also two power meters. These show average power; you can choose over what period this average is set. They can be turned off if required. Inputs on XLR and SE. Power output is fairly low at 25W/channel in to 8 ohms, 35W in to 4 ohms. It can also work as a mono amplifier with a 70W channel in to 8 ohm rating. The amp is very quiet, mechanically and electrically (so far as I can detect through my speakers). As background to how this combinations sounds to me, a little about the type of music I have listened to on the system. I don’t listen to much in the way of classical, with the exception of works by Steve Reich, John Adams and Terry Riley. It’s mostly jazz, from 50’s Blue Note to Pat Metheney’s more ‘adventurous’ work. And of course some prog, but not so much these days (but Selling England does indeed sound really good through the system!). My speakers are Harbeth P3ESRs. You might think that such a lowly powered amp would be a hopeless mismatch with these low sensitivity ‘speakers. Not a bit of it. The P3s are easy to drive. In my listening environment, at a round 80dB levels, sitting about 2m or so away, then the amp never even breaks a sweat. The power meters hardly move above 0.5W. Even when I turn it up a bit, it rarely goes above 3W. There’s no sign of clipping that I can detect and I’ve been listening to systems to well over 40 years. I’ll talk about the system as a whole, as I haven’t listened to the components individually. Having said that, i strongly suspect that the DA200 is the stronger performer of the two. Describing sound is just so subjective, it’s a difficult one to put in to writing. The overall sound is very complete, to my ears. The detail of the music is all there, but there’s not that often found forwardness bordering on stridency (?) (as I find the MDAC, by way of comparison). It all hangs together well. No sibilance at all (apart from on some poor recordings). The presentation may be a bit too laid back for some as it does lean towards the warm side of neutral. To illustrate this, my previous amp with the Harbs was a Bel Canto C5; a very fine amp. That produced a much cleaner sound, bordering on sterile. It also controlled the P3s a bit better as bass was better defined using that amp. But it just wasn’t engaging, if you take my meaning? I much prefer the sound using the Luxman pairing. I've tried other amps with the P3s, including the Gato DIA-250, which was good, but again just a tad too controlled, for me. I don't want to gush on about mids, highs, soundstage and the like; I'll just say that music is presented beautifully, with instruments easy to place and hear, with a sound that seems independent of the 'speakers. OK, bass (or lack of) will be an issue for many, but if that's important to you then you probably wouldn't choose P3s (although they can surprise). Overall I’m very happy with this combination. Both components are satisfying to use, nice to look at and produce a very grown up sound. They originally retailed at the £2K per component mark, which I think was overpriced. They are now available at substantially less, a price point at which you’d struggle to match, let alone, beat them. If you can live with the low power then very much worth considering. PS: I know everyone likes a piccie, so I've uploaded some to my gallery on this site

  7. Luxman PD-171A Set Up The Luxman PD-171A Turntable is the latest addition to our turntable line up. Delivering a bold, fluid and refined sound, The PD-171A is a unique addition to our turntable portfolio. Here is an article from Steve at Fanthorpes describing the full setup of the PD-171A….. First thing that impresses is the careful use of multiple individual layers of packaging, with individual compartments for the separate parts giving excellent protection and also allowing parts to be easily identified on opening the box. The main plinth section is enclosed in a cloth and polythene bags to protect the beautiful wood and metal finishes. When placing the main plinth section onto my stand I was impressed by the isolated felt bottomed feet, with the two front feet being adjustable to allow me to easily level the turntable for the next setup procedures. The tonearm usefully comes pre fitted but using the removable headshell allowed me to easily mount the cartridge and fit the cartridge wires correctly. The arm height (VTA) is simple to set as horizontal prior to listening tests using the side mounted allen bolt, allen keys are supplied in the box. Also the cueing platform is adjustable for height using an allen bolt. The high level of engineering quality was evident straight away when opening the box with very high quality surface finish on all parts, as I mounted the platter and motor cover plate this care of manufacture and build quality was nice to see and made accurate adjustments very easy. The 5kg platter was simple to fit and did not require a lot of handling due to the cleverly supplied screw in keys which fit temporarily to the platter to lift it into place, no fingermarks left on the platter edge. The concave motor pulley ensures correct position of the belt as the unit is running, this is a single diameter the speed changed by simple use of the front top surface mounted 33 and 45rpm selection buttons, additionally there is a variable pitch control which is lovely and precise and enabled me to accurately set the speed. Setting the tracking force was very easy to do using the screw on counterweight due to its fine, well turned thread on the stub axle. I am using the Roksan digital stylus force gauge for quick and accurate setting, here being set to 2.5g for our demonstration Ortofon Cadenza Red moving coil cartridge. Cartridge alignment being set using the easy to use AVID universal protractor. As a conclusion this turntable was a pleasure to assemble and adjust due to the exemplary manufacturing quality of all parts and the precision of all adjustment controls. The well protected and clever packaging made sure all parts were straight to hand as needed and assembly was simple especially due to the platter keys and the removable tonearm headshell. This turntable will provide any owner with a real pride of ownership combining both a traditional attractive design and superb finish to both wood and metal surface. Retailing at £4995 the PD-171A is a must listen for people considering a new deck at this price point. 11. Selling my Luxman P-700U Headphone Amp. This is a beast of an amplifier - weighs in at over 12 Kgs and has enough power to drive any headphone to number 11. Purchased in June 2016 on eBay, the original listing read: "I bought this from Analogue Seduction in March for £3000 http://www.analogueseduction.net/luxman-headphone-amplifiers/luxman-p-700u-headphone-amplifier.html. Used it a handful of times with my headphones. Its a fantastic amplifier I no longer need. Original manuals, box etc all included. in perfect working order, and in immaculate condition (just dusty!). UK model 220v-240V.I ship DHL or UPS tracked, overnight, express free of charge in the UK. I ship outside the United Kingdom, but it is not free - message me with your country and post code for a quote. Please be aware this is heavy, at almost 13KG - one of the most substantial headphone amplifiers right now on the market and able to drive anything I have tried, including Audeze LCD 4, Hifi Man HE1000 etc." I've used it for the last couple of months but have decided to move it on and "downsize" (literally) to a Questyle. There's no receipt but I'm happy to warranty this for 6 months -m anything goes wrong I'll help sort out any claim via Analogue Seduction. In excellent condition (there's a rub mark on the top which is hardly noticeable) with box and manual. Cost me £1435, looking for £1250. Current RRP is £2995! Weighs a ton so woulds prefer collection or can deliver/ meet within 75 miles of London. I won't ship this outside the UK as the cost (to the buyer) would be prohibitive!

  14. Looking to swap my mint boxed Japanese manufactured Luxman SQ100N for a solid state amp of comparable quality - the Luxman is superb quality, but I need more power. Prefer an integrated, but a compact pre/power would be OK. Or you can tempt me with a pair of Quad electrostatics. Cash adjustment either way.
