  1. I switched the M DAC plus from USB to SPIDIF and the whole thing sounds a million times better!! So much more balanced! Time for some more listening
  2. unfortunately not, still got a very bright top end. I feel like the a39 will be the better choice long term- dynamics, bass, detail and soundstage are much better than the alpha 10....its just way too trebley and fatiguing when turned up to any considerable volume!

  4. hey is this still available? :)
  5. i have tried a different source and it's definitely the audiolab M DAC + that's causing the unwanted brightness. it sounds great at low volumes but as soon as the volume is cranked the treble is quite unpleasant. thinking of keeping the arcam a39 and swapping out for either the Rega DAC R or Beresford Caiman MK 2 - does anyone have experience with these in a similar setup? are there any other DACs available new or 2nd hand for around £400 that are worth a look at? thanks again for the responses - really helpful!
  6. you know what sir, i think you very may well be correct! hmmmmm, decisions decisions!! pretty much every other element of the A39 sounds better than the alpha, its just the very top end that's a bit grating!
  7. i actually have the a39 still! oooo i turned my audiolab M DAC plus down from 0dB output to -6 dB and that is significantly better!! further listening required it definately puts out a LOT more bass than the alpha! Is there a recommended level? i would have thought 0 dB would be line level? definitely agree I may have gotten used to a "warmer" rather than "neutral" sound!
  8. so i tried the arcam a39.....soundstage and dynamics were brilliant but it's way too bright at volume for my tastes! i'm going to stick with my trusty arcam alpha 10 integrated. if i purchased the matching power amp (10P) and connected through the integrated amp's pre outs would that improve the sound at all? (even the KEF LS50s can't be bi amped)
  9. budget is between around £800! also considering a nuprime IDA 8 or emotiva 150W pre and power amp combo. a bit worried the nuprime could be underpowered (i like it loud!) and as i said before if the newer arcam amplifiers are a slightly improved version of the alpha 10 i'd be a happy man! thanks for all the responses - much appreciated!
  10. i'm wondering if the newer arcam amps sound even better! looking for someone to clarify that has heard both the alpha 10 and the newer a39 i will get it fixed eventually!
  11. I'm looking for something as powerful and similar sounding to the arcam alpha 10 - i love it! Just thinking one of the newer Arcam amps might be very similar and maybe even better! They'll definitely be better looking!
  12. Hey! I have been running my KEF lS50s with an old battered Arcam Alpha 10 which sounded amazing - maybe a bit bass light but very controlled and powerful. Unfortunately it died. What would you recommend to replace? I was thinking of the Arcam A39 if I stick with Arcam, does it have a similar sonic sound? Warm, powerful and punch? Cheers J
