Cello music recommendations

I seem to be developing a liking for Cello music.

Can anybody recommend a well recorded album of Cello music ? From chamber to symphony, as long as it is a high quality cellist and recording then I'm not too fussed.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks chaps, instantly helpful as usual. I've gone for your choice Teddy Ray and Dvorak from yours Russ.

Looking forward to them both.

The Jacqueline Du Pre 1965 recording of the Elgar cello concerto on EMI is considered by many to be the definitive recording.

There are any number of albums with the Elgar concerto paired up with something else. Take your pick really, but try to get a listen to that recording.

Perhaps this very recent recording of Bach's Cello Suites may be to your liking. At least you can have a listen to parts of all the tracks to see what you think. Here is the link:

Linn also have various other cello recordings - http://www.linnrecords.com/search.aspx?query=cello

A particular favourite CD of mine which includes the cello is - http://www.linnrecords.com/recording-vivaldi-concerti-hdcd.aspx

Happy listening to your newly found taste for the cello.

I'm a big fan of the cello too!

I'd definitely second the Rostropovich / Bach recording (bargain copy available here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bach-Cello-Suites-Mstislav-Rostropovich/dp/B00127ITJ4). But, as possibly the greatest cello pieces ever, it is worth getting a range of recordings. Heinrich Schiff, Yo-yo Ma, and Isserlis are great too.

Possibly my favourite cello recording is also with Rostropovich, and Britten no less: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schubert-Schumann-Debussy-Mstislav-Rostropovich/dp/B000KQGOBI

Isserlis's Brahms Cello sonatas mentioned are also good but actually I think I prefer his album of Schumann more: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schumann-Music-Cello-Piano-Isserlis

Some more Rostropovich: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rostropovich-Master-Cellist-Mstislav/dp/B000062R5A

The EMI Jacky Du Pre collection is worth getting for 14 cds including the famous cello concerto recording: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jacqueline-Du-Pre-Complete-Recordings/dp/B000V9P4YM

Get's my vote as well - had the pleasure of hearing him play these works live.

Seconded.

Cello definitely has the edge on violin, imho.

SWMBO is a cellist so we tend to have a lot of cello music around.

You've had some good recomendations, especially the Du Pre boxset.

This set is also very good and never strays far from the CDP

(click the pic for an Amazon link)

At £8 for 6 CDs of EMI recordings it's well worth picking up.

The Bach Cello Suites were mentioned below. I think they are wonderful and have this version by Zuill Bailey http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bach-Cello-Suites-Johann-Sebastian/dp/B0030GBSVQ/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_3
