Not all VDH cables have the carbon conductors.

I have a set (6) of their C5 patch cables on my 5.1 system for DVD-A playback.

Silver plated OFC with a carbon coating.

They're a well made cable and the price is (or at least was) reasonable.

No bland and dull sound there. :nup:

Porcupine Tree on DVD-A sounds simultaneously  and

Why do they use carbon and how on earth would you terminate them?

My personal suspicion is becuase it makes them sound different. Whether they sound better or not is of course entirely subjective, but when 99.9999999% of fit for purpose cables sound identical, being able to make one tht does sound "different" is something of a USP.

Aha, time for the Van den Hul Song, to the tune of the old "Robin Hood" TV series.

How to pronounce “Hul”? Well, according to my tame native Dutch speakers, the “u” sound in this case falls between those in “dull” and in “pull” – probably the nearest in English is the one in “bury”. So, I’ve having it both ways and rhyming it with “dull” in the first and third refrains and “pull” in the second and fourth:

Van den Hul, van den Hul, scientific sleaze

Van den Hul, looks for gul-ible folks to fleece

Trade mark should be crossed bones and skull

Van den Hul, van den Hul, van den Hul

He called the greatest con men to a tavern near the dike

They vowed to sell a cable with price hike

Their rhetoric was ready, their distortions were in place

And they spouted it forth with straight face.

Van den Hul is no fool when it comes to bend

Every rule taught at school, should it somehow lend

Credence to his pulling the wool

Van den Hul, van den Hul, van den Hul

He castigates those wires made of metal by drawing

To justify his carbon (that’s his thing)

Like other cable con-men he gives facts unusual twist

Solves problems that really don’t exist.

Van den Hul, like seagull, soars hyperbole

Van den Hul, never dull, humbugs happily

Seeking believing folk to lull

Van den Hul, van den Hul, van den Hul

Burn-in, he says, are tunnels formed in cables on the floor

Electrons pass more easily, sounds soar

But when they’re vacuum-cleaned the tunnelling is all in vain

It takes a week before they’re back again.

Van den Hul’s line of bull, is a real show-stopper

Van den Hul, audio ghoul, master of the whopper

Snake oil abounds, knee-deep in pools

Van den Hul, van den Hul, van den Hul.

this is it, no idea why it uses carbon, and no idea about cars :/

not sure how i'll terminate them, crimp perhaps? doubt my solder would stick to carbon :nup:

can just imagine some nice fancy text on that. "Carbon is essential to Organic life, you're made from 18% carbon, it only makes sense your interconnects should be carbon too".

Will call the cable "the Karbon" or perhaps "qARBON" or some other really cool and super-duper original misspelling of carbon.

I use both The First and The First Ultimate.

They are certainly not rolled off on the treble.

They are exceptionally good cables when used properly. That is between digital sources and amplifiers.

I agree they are less convincing between pre and power amps.

I also have several friends who use these cables in preference to anything else.

They can make digital reproduction sound more like vinyl and once you get use them in this role anything else sounds grainy,splashy....and...well....metallic.They also have superb imaging.

They also do away with the need for that absurd implementation of valve output stages in DACs and CD players and for a lot less money.

They are one of the great bargains in audio. The First Ultimate is the more neutral of the two and has better bass but The First has a lovely organic midrange.

If you can try some - let your ears decide!!! Carbon may be less conductive but if it helps get the most/more enjoyment out of your system then go for it. I think where it helps is that so many digital based systems can sound harsh or overly splashy - its also been around for years now and I assume sells reasonably well when other products have come and gone.

Does anyone have any experience of van den hul Integration Hybrid, to use between dac and integrated amp??

Yup - they sound the same as all the other VdH carbon/carbon hybrids - bland and rolled off.

There is a certain rightness about the mids that is good at first, but my attention soon starts to wander because of the dynamic blandness. :zzzz:

Between my Sonos or Meridian 200 transport and Audio Synthesis Dac, I've tried the VDH 75ohm pro triax, an Ecosse digital cable, the First and First Ultimate and the Audio Synthesis 75ohm Silver Blue Triax. The best of these is definitely the Audio Synthesis. I think single core rather than stranded gives better resolution and a true 75ohm measurement is key to getting the best results (that's obviously on the RCA connection). Audio Synthesis wins the day yet again. My faith in that company just gets stronger as my experience grows. Not only do they use high quality components, but they have some of the best test measuring equipment available, so you know that it's real science, not subjective.

LOL.

It is a testament to the undemanding nature of audio signal transmission that you can lash up some interconnects out of spark plug leads and they will work - at least after a fashion.

It is a testament to the perversity of human nature that some people will earnestly believe the lash-up to be an improvement!

:D

This thread reminded me to check eBay where I reported a seller for passing off his own cables made up using VdH cable and Neutrik Rean phonos as the genuine article. His cables are no longer for sale, good.

This always cracks me up - it's like Bonnie and Clyde complaining that some people calling themselves Ronnie and Claude are robbing their banks and it's not fair and boo hoo!

Grow up, children - the "fakes" will sound just the same. :P
