My faithful mullard gz34 in my leak stereo 20 has gone kaput , i have been looking for a replacement but they seem to be fetching nearly 100 pounds, wow !!. Are jj tubes ok as they sell for about 15 pounds . Does it really make that much difference with this valve and if it does can anyone recommend a good fair priced one

cheers hifi

My experience of JJ GZ34s has been good, in terms of reliability. I've never pushed them really hard, but you won't be pushing them really hard in a Stereo20 either. I'm afraid you won't get any agreement about 'sound'. As far as engineers can measure they deliver the same low-ripple HT as any decent GZ34 does. My biggest issue with them, and it's not very big, is their hemispherical top which somehow just looks wrong. But it doesn't seem to change the way they work. If you want a flat-topped one and don't mind the brown base then the TAD ones aren't too pricey http://www.hotroxuk.com/tad-gz34-5ar4-str-premium-select-rt501.html.

+1, when looking for a 'new' valve I tend to go for JJ's first with the current price of NOS units and in many cases actually prefer the JJ's to the old production ones they replaced.

I also get mine from Tube-Town in Germany as quite often they are cheaper than from UK suppliers, even with added postage!
